Piping: Home & Away matches

A couple of public music events coming up quite soon – both of which should be quite qood fun.

First up is a ‘home’ gig – Monday 19th May  7.30 at St Michaels Church in Wark. A good friend of mine (a fine moothie player and composer of tunes) is hosting a musical evening with ‘Cross the Wanneys’, the local choral society are putting in a turn and I’m looking forward to getting a few tunes out on the pipes.

Shortly after that at the end of June (27th-29th), it’s off to Winster in Derbyshire for the English Country Music Weekend which is always a joyous affair and I’ll be putting in a couple of turns over the weekend and on the Saturday evening ceilidh. It’s a beautifully low-key & informal event and with a rare concentration of trad musical magic – visit the ECMW pages or you can find them on Facebook.

Old Year's Night Poster

Update: Now sold out – wait list on returns

The ever popular annual village night out returns as anticipated & expected on the 30th December – “Old Year’s Night” is an evening of Northumbrian Music, Songs & Stories that continues to feature some of the best of local performers. Supper will be a Bring and Share affair to start the evening and then we’ll get going with the entertainment as soon as people have eaten and we can clear a little space.

I’ll be hosting and throwing in a few tunes and will be able to introduce yet another fine of talent who have been persuaded to come and perform this year:

  • Singer, Storyteller & Musician Johnny Handle – a simply masterful entertainer
  • Andy May – nothing short of a musical genius on the pipes
  • As local & as popular as can be; singer and storyteller Graham Dick

Fiddler & Composer Ian Hardie – 1952-2012

I recently heard the sad news of the passing of Scots fiddler & composer Ian Hardie at the the age of 59. Once resident in the Borders, Ian was a prolific composer of tunes and many have been borrowed over the years by Northumbrian musicians. I’ve been playing the magnificent Sutor’s Waltz for many years and it was an easy decision to put that on my CD. The late, great Joe Hutton recorded Snow on the Ben & The Grand Slam, while Kathryn Tickell’s early recordings included Catchapenny Fox, Bowmont Water and The Bonnie Lass O’Wark.

Ian recorded a number of solo albums and they’re well worth getting hold of – the first ‘A Breath of Fresh Airs’ is probably the hardest to find since it dates to the LP (and cassette!) era. His compositions were published alongside each recording and I always made a point of getting hold of them; the well thumbed copies are still on my music shelf. A few years back, as the early books went out of print Ian took the decision to simply publish all of the music directly and all of his tunes are up there waiting to be discovered.

Ian moved out of the Borders and up to the Highlands around the time I started playing – his tunes were handed on to me by other musicians and I had always hoped to meet up with him one day, play some tunes and thank him for them. The opportunity has sadly now passed so I’ll do what people did for me and pass his tunes on.

Re-released as Digital Download!

It’s just over two years since Veteran Records release my CD: O’er Lang at the Fair. Traditional music is very much a niche musical audience; physical CDs are still very much the norm and I’ve probably met a fair number of the people who’ve bought the CD (thank you!).

Through the wonders of modern technology and by properly keeping up with music cataloguing standard, John has now made the whole of his catalogue available as digital downloads. All of this means you can now find me on loads of digital download services: play.com, emusic, amazon (and also once the catalogues update: hmv.com, itunes, napster)

John is also distributing the recordings from the sadly short lived Kyloe Records label – on which you can find the marvellous Andrew & Margaret Watchorn (Lecchemede) and the virtuso playing of Mr Chris Ormston on ‘Time Out of Mind’ . Sadly the Kyloe recordings aren’t available just yet – fingers crossed we’ll be able to keep these recordings available.
